Tradizione e innovazione

Murano glass from 1945 to 1970
26 October 2025 – 22 March 2026

The 1950s and 1960s are considered a period of great creative achievement for Murano glass. Innovative trends from the pre-war period blossomed here: designer Fulvio Bianconi pioneered a new style characterised by a spontaneous and ironic approach to the material. At the same time, the craftsmanship of Murano's glassmakers achieved breathtaking results. The objects created by Archimede Seguso captivate with their high degree of complexity. The objects on display thus illustrate the tension between traditional techniques on the one hand and the lines of Murano glass production of that era, developed under the influence of contemporary art.

The new special exhibition at the Gernheim Glassworks brings together works mainly from private collections. It spans the spectrum from Ercole Barovier, who experimented with glass qualities and inclusions as a glass technician, to Fulvio Bianconi, who even broke with traditional craft techniques by elevating imperfection to a design element. Paolo Venini played a major role in this artistic upswing, systematically inviting international greats to Murano since the 1950s. However, other major manufacturers also picked up on these trends, such as Aureliano Toso and Alfredo Barbini, who designed massive objects in the furnace with the utmost precision, completely breaking with the traditional canon of forms.
